The Golden Calf

¹³^(A)“Furthermore, the Lord said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and behold, it is ^(B)a stubborn people. ¹⁴^(C)Let me alone, that I may destroy them and ^(D)blot out their name from under heaven. And ^(E)I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’ ¹⁵^(F)So I turned and came down from the mountain, and ^(G)the mountain was burning with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. ¹⁶And ^(H)I looked, and behold, you had sinned against the Lord your God. You had made yourselves a golden^[a] calf. ^(I)You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. ¹⁷So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes. ¹⁸Then I ^(J)lay prostrate before the Lord ^(K)as before, forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all the sin that you had committed, ^(L)in doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord to provoke him to anger. ¹⁹For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure that the Lord bore against you, so that he was ready to destroy you. ^(M)But the Lord listened to me that time also. ²⁰And the Lord was so angry with Aaron that he was ready to destroy him. And I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. ²¹Then ^(N)I took the sinful thing, the calf that you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust. And I threw the dust of it into the brook that ran down from the mountain.

²²“At ^(O)Taberah also, and at ^(P)Massah and at ^(Q)Kibroth-hattaavah you provoked the Lord to wrath. ²³And ^(R)when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘Go up and take possession of the land that I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God and ^(S)did not believe him or obey his voice. ²⁴^(T)You have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you.

²⁵^(U)“So I lay prostrate before the Lord for these forty days and forty nights, because the Lord had said he would destroy you. ²⁶^(V)And I prayed to the Lord, ‘O Lord God, do not destroy your people and your heritage, whom you have redeemed through your greatness, whom you have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. ²⁷Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Do not regard the stubbornness of this people, or their wickedness or their sin, ²⁸lest the land from which you brought us say, ^(W)“Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land that he promised them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.” ²⁹^(X)For they are your people and your heritage, whom you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm.’

⁵⁵^(E)The sons of Solomon's servants: the sons of Sotai, the sons of Hassophereth, the sons of Peruda, ⁵⁶the sons of Jaalah, the sons of Darkon, the sons of Giddel, ⁵⁷the sons of Shephatiah, the sons of Hattil, the sons of Pochereth-hazzebaim, and the sons of Ami.

⁵⁸All the temple servants and the sons of Solomon's servants were 392.

⁵⁹The following were those who came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer, ^(F)though they could not prove their fathers' houses or their descent, whether they belonged to Israel: ⁶⁰the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, and the sons of Nekoda, 652. ⁶¹Also, of the sons of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, and the sons of ^(G)Barzillai (who had taken a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called by their name). ⁶²These sought their registration among those enrolled in the genealogies, but they were not found there, and ^(H)so they were excluded from the priesthood as unclean. ⁶³The ^(I)governor told them that they were not ^(J)to partake of the most holy food, until there should be a priest to consult ^(K)Urim and Thummim.

⁶⁴^(L)The whole assembly together was 42,360, ⁶⁵besides their male and female servants, of whom there were 7,337, and they had 200 male and female ^(M)singers. ⁶⁶Their horses were 736, their mules were 245, ⁶⁷their camels were 435, and their donkeys were 6,720.

⁶⁸^(N)Some of the heads of families, when they came to the house of the Lord that is in Jerusalem, made freewill offerings for the house of God, to erect it on its site. ⁶⁹According to their ability they gave to ^(O)the treasury of the work 61,000 darics^[a] of gold, 5,000 minas^[b] of silver, and 100 priests' garments.

⁷⁰^(P)Now the priests, the Levites, some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants lived in their towns, and all the rest of Israel^[c] in their towns.

¹The vision of Obadiah.

Edom Will Be Humbled

Thus says the Lord God ^(A)concerning Edom:
^(B)We have heard a report from the Lord,
    and a messenger has been sent among the nations:
“Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!”
²Behold, I will make you small among the nations;
    you shall be utterly despised.^[a]
³^(C)The pride of your heart has deceived you,
    you who live in the clefts of the rock,^[b]
    in your lofty dwelling,
^(D)who say in your heart,
    “Who will bring me down to the ground?”
⁴Though you soar aloft like the eagle,
    though your nest is set among the stars,
    from there I will bring you down,
declares the Lord.

⁵If ^(E)thieves came to you,
    if plunderers came by night—
    how you have been destroyed!—
    would they not steal only enough for themselves?
If ^(F)grape gatherers came to you,
    would they not leave gleanings?
⁶^(G)How Esau has been pillaged,
    his treasures sought out!
⁷All your allies have driven you to your border;
    those at peace with you have deceived you;
they have prevailed against you;
    ^(H)those who eat your bread^[c] have set a trap beneath you—
    ^(I)you have^[d] no understanding.

⁸^(J)Will I not on that day, declares the Lord,
    destroy the wise men out of Edom,
    and understanding out of ^(K)Mount Esau?
⁹And your mighty men shall be dismayed, ^(L)O Teman,
    so that every man from ^(M)Mount Esau will be cut off by slaughter.

Edom's Violence Against Jacob

¹⁰^(N)Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob,
    shame shall cover you,
    ^(O)and you shall be cut off forever.
¹¹^(P)On the day that you stood aloof,
    ^(Q)on the day that strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
    ^(R)and cast lots for Jerusalem,
    you were like one of them.
¹²^(S)But do not gloat over the day of your brother
    in the day of his misfortune;
^(T)do not rejoice over the people of Judah
    in the day of their ruin;
^(U)do not boast^[e]
    in the day of distress.
¹³^(V)Do not enter the gate of my people
    in the day of their calamity;
^(W)do not gloat over his disaster
    in the day of his calamity;
^(X)do not loot his wealth
    in the day of his calamity.
¹⁴^(Y)Do not stand at the crossroads
    to cut off his fugitives;
do not hand over his survivors
    in the day of distress.

The Day of the Lord Is Near

¹⁵For ^(Z)the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations.
^(AA)As you have done, it shall be done to you;
    your deeds shall return on your own head.
¹⁶^(AB)For as you have drunk on ^(AC)my holy mountain,
    so all the nations shall drink continually;
they shall drink and swallow,
    and shall be as though they had never been.
¹⁷^(AD)But in Mount Zion there shall be those who escape,
    and it shall be holy,
^(AE)and the house of Jacob shall possess their own possessions.
¹⁸^(AF)The house of Jacob shall be a fire,
    and the house of Joseph a flame,
    and the house of Esau ^(AG)stubble;
they shall burn them and consume them,
    ^(AH)and there shall be no survivor for the house of Esau,
for the Lord has spoken.

The Kingdom of the Lord

¹⁹Those of ^(AI)the Negeb ^(AJ)shall possess ^(AK)Mount Esau,
    and those of the Shephelah shall possess ^(AL)the land of the Philistines;
they shall possess the land of Ephraim and the land of ^(AM)Samaria,
    and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
²⁰The exiles of this host of the people of Israel
    shall possess the land of the Canaanites as far as ^(AN)Zarephath,
and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
    shall possess the cities of the Negeb.
²¹^(AO)Saviors shall go up to Mount Zion
    to rule ^(AP)Mount Esau,
    and ^(AQ)the kingdom shall be the Lord's.

    your strength is small.

Does not he who ^(E)keeps watch over your soul know it,

¹³My son, ^(G)eat honey, for it is good,
    and ^(H)the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste.
¹⁴Know that wisdom is such to your soul;
    if you find it, there will be ^(I)a future,
    and your hope will not be cut off.

¹⁵^(J)Lie not in wait as a wicked man against the dwelling of the righteous;
do no violence to his home;

and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles,
¹⁸lest the Lord see it and be displeased,
and turn away his anger from him.

¹⁹^(O)Fret not yourself because of evildoers,
and be not ^(P)envious of the wicked,
²⁰for the evil man has no ^(Q)future;
^(R)the lamp of the wicked will be put out.

²¹My son, ^(S)fear the Lord and the king,
and do not join with those who do otherwise,
²²for disaster will arise suddenly from them,
and who knows the ruin that will come from them both?

¹⁰The thief comes only to steal and ^(A)kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. ¹¹^(B)I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd ^(C)lays down his life for the sheep. ¹²He who is ^(D)a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and ^(E)leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and ^(F)scatters them. ¹³He flees because ^(G)he is a hired hand and ^(H)cares nothing for the sheep. ¹⁴^(I)I am the good shepherd. ^(J)I know my own and ^(K)my own know me, ¹⁵^(L)just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and ^(M)I lay down my life for the sheep. ¹⁶And ^(N)I have other sheep that are not of this fold. ^(O)I must bring them also, and ^(P)they will listen to my voice. ¹⁹^(AA)There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. ²⁰Many of them said, ^(AB)“He has a demon, and ^(AC)is insane; why listen to him?” ²¹Others said, “These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon. ^(AD)Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

Crescens has gone to Galatia,^[a] ^(F)Titus to Dalmatia. ¹¹^(G)Luke alone is with me. Get ^(H)Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. ¹²^(I)Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. ¹³When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. ¹⁴^(J)Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; ^(K)the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. ¹⁵Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. ¹⁶At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. ^(L)May it not be charged against them! ¹⁷But ^(M)the Lord stood by me and ^(N)strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and ^(O)all the Gentiles might hear it. So ^(P)I was rescued ^(Q)from the lion's mouth. ¹⁸The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. ^(R)To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
